Some former Hartford Wanderer Mens Rugby teammates start meeting up in the summer with their young sons and daughters and teaching them rugby.
Wethersfield Youth Rugby (the Red Onions) is officially formed as a part of the Wethersfield Park and Rec program. Former Hartford Wanderers Doug Partridge, Shawn Brennan, Tim Foley, Sean Sierra, Rob Chudzik, Kevin O’Connell, and Aussie Expatriate Greg Harris introduce kids to rugby Sevens in a flag format. Playing at Mill Woods Park the inaugural season is a great success with over 60 kids joining the program.
WYRFC continues it’s summer rugby sevens and goes on it’s first tour attending the Morris New Jersey Youth Flag Tournament winning in all 3 age divisions they enter.
Wethersfield has their first intrastate flag games against Cheshire Youth Rugby. The Red Onions also go on their second rugby tour, this time to a tournament in Rahway NJ and enjoy great success again both on and off the pitch.
While still maintaining it’s vibrant flag program the coaches introduce full contact sevens for the older more experienced players. Friendly, spirited flag and tackle matches are had with rival club Cheshire.
The club’s tackle division continues to grow and kicks off the season with a successful outing at a round robin tournament with Aspetuck and Ridgefield youth rugby clubs. WYRFC also plays Cheshire and Simsbury in U14 & U12 matches during the season.
WYRFC along with Ridgefield, Chesire, Fairfield, and Simsbury form the Constitution League, a Connecticut Youth Rugby League that will partake in games during a six week summer season culminating with a championship tournament on July 25.
